Taller Coreográfico de la UNAM

Mexico's leading contemporary ballet company, fuses universal ballet with historical Mexican dances for a new definition of modern Mexico. The TALLER COREOGRÁFICO DE LA UNAM (pronounced Tayer Koreografeekoh), was founded by GLORIA CONTRERAS in 1970. In 30 years of uninterrupted activity, the TALLER has become a major force in Latin America's contemporary ballet scene. Comprised of 18 classically trained dancers, the TALLER COREOGRÁFICO has an original repertoire of over 200 ballets, with musical scores ranging from the 12th century to contemporary works. In addition to critical acclaim the TALLER COREOGRÁFICO is one of the most popular ballet companies in Latin America. The company has two resident theatres in Mexico City and offers over 100 performances a year to sold out theatres in Mexico and abroad. Last year the TALLER's presentations in Mexico's prestigious Palace of Bellas Artes were so successful that it was necessary to install a giant screen outside the theatre to accommodate the thousands of people who couldn't get a ticket. The company has been equally successful in the United States. During 1998 and 1999, the TALLER COREOGRÁFICO performed at the LUCKMAN FINE ARTS COMPLEX in Los Angeles. The performances became one of the highest grossing events of the year. The TALLER COREOGRÁFICO owes its success to the originality of its choreography and the excellence of its dancers, that appeal to a sophisticated Latino community that no longer identifies with the traditional folkloric image that has been offered during decades. This young, upwardly mobile Latino audience, one of the fastest growing in the United States, is eager to embrace cultural expressions like the TALLER COREOGRÁFICO, that offer a more modern image of itself. As critic Mitchell Snow affirms: "The choreography of Gloria Contreras provides a new aesthetic definition of today's Mexico in a body of unforgettable works. Her dances are not only momentary successes, they are classics".
